Learning is Happening in B118

Okay, so I'm still trying to get into the blogging mode. So, I apologize for the lack of posts thus far.

We are in full learning mode these days!  Last week was a busy week. We talked about what makes a complete sentence: Capital letter, spacing between words, punctuation at the end, and that it  must make sense with a WHO and a WHAT. The students did GREAT on this! They were identifying complete and non-complete sentences as fast as I could throw them out. Students also began writing their own complete sentences like the one below.  After reading, When I Was Little by Jaime Lee Curtis, we discussed things they did when they were little that they no longer do now that they are "big" kids. Students then drew a picture of what they used to do. The next day, they wrote sentences based on their drawing. They used the Scribble Press app to type their sentences and add a photo of their drawing.  Scribble Press is a great app for students to use when writing because they can create a book or just a one page document as well as take pictures or draw their own illustrations.

We also worked on Reading to Self which is part of our Daily 5 Reading curriculum. Reading to self is a great chance for our students to build their reading stamina. They love it! They choose a quiet place in the room and take their "good fit" books with them. Some choose to use the reading phones to whisper to themselves as they read the words on the pages. Our goal is to build stamina to 10 minutes of constant reading.

We continued working on sorting by attributes in Math. The students seem to really love this time. It's so hands on and really keeps them involved. We talked about how different objects can be sorted by various attributes such as color, size, shape, texture, etc... Buttons, polygons, shells,  and plastic animals were all sorted. Students played a little game called Guess My Rule in which they would sort objects that fit the rule they sorted by on one mat and all of the other would go on a different mat. Can you guess the rule here?

By Friday, we were ready for some fun! We had a Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse themed day.  Of course, we read Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and talked about all of Lilly's characteristics. We even wrote them on a character map. After discussing all of the reasons Lilly wanted to be a teacher when she grew up, the students did a little writing themselves. They each wrote what they want to be when they grow up and why and then finished it off with a picture. To wind down our day, the students did a Lilly craft. They look really cute  hanging in our hallway!

I hope to be better this week and actually blog about our week before the next week rolls around! If not, check back.... There will eventually be a post about our week.
